You know the kind of horse I mean: The old ones that are left at the barn, forgotten, because their owners are no longer interested now that they can't do what they used to. Or maybe the ones that you see listed on Craigslist, being given away as "companion horses" because they're old or lame or otherwise unrideable.
A barn in Florida has come up with a great solution for these old, ignored horses: horse-crazy little girls.
Young riders adopt aging horses
What a great idea, right? Horse-crazy little girls have a lot of love to give, and are grateful for any horse they get to interact with. And honestly, old horses have earned their right to be spoiled by a little girl.
By all accounts, it’s working. 10-year-old Emma Hechtman loves to dote on her adopted horse, Yaeger. She spoils him. “When you’re 28 years old, you get to do whatever you want.”
12-year-old Hailey Debrunner bonded with Brownie. “He’s just like me. Crazy and always wants to run around and get treats. I didn’t want to just leave her sitting in her stall and doing nothing.” Especially since Brownie also has cancer.
How wonderful is that?!
