Two bareback rides

I'm quite behind in the summer horsemanship challenge -- even though we've had some dry weather since all that rain I blogged about, I've been too busy to do much.  I accomplished two of the bareback rides and about four hours of horsey time, though -- one ride last Thursday, and another last night.

A friend of mine, we'll call him Z., is doing the challenge with me. He rode with me both times, also bareback. He's fairly new to horses, but he's eager to learn and has been doing pretty well. I've had him on the lunge line to practice trotting in the past, but during both of our bareback rides he practiced trotting on his own.  He's also pretty quickly learned to keep his hands low and not do that beginner thing of holding them too high when he's nervous or trying to balance.

Neither Thursday's nor last night's ride were very long, but it was still fun to get out and ride.  Both rides were late at night, and therefore in the indoor arena.  Panama was happy to be ridden and probably would have been more hyper had we ridden earlier in the day, especially outside, or had I saddled him (luckily he understands I am not as secure bareback, and is more careful with me).  Rondo, being Rondo, was sleepy and lazy, of course.

We may or may not attempt to ride tonight, too.  It depends on how tired we are.  I haven't been getting enough sleep lately, so I'll just have to see how I'm feeling after work!
