Rondo earns his keep

Rondo has been earning his keep, at least partially, for some time.  Lately he's really stepping up his game.  One of my fellow boarders asked me to give her daughter little beginner lessons on Rondo -- mostly it's just lunge line stuff, which I've done plenty of with some of the kids I take care of.  I don't think I'm a bad teacher at the beginner levels, so it works out well for both of us.

Then last week one of the trainers who teaches lessons at the barn asked if one of her students, an 11-year-old girl we'll call J., could borrow Rondo for her twice-weekly lessons while her horse recovered from surgery.

J.'s horse, a cute little Arabian mare around the same size as Panama, was having a lot of problem with ovarian cysts, so they took her to the CSU large animal hospital and had her ovaries removed.  She just returned to the barn today and will need a month to recover, so J. will ride Rondo in the meantime.

Today she did a little trial ride, with me to show her and her trainer the ropes.  Rondo did pretty well with J., and after some initial fear (he's a lot bigger than Pepsi!), she actually liked him quite a lot.  Her parents paid me for a month-long lease, and the trainer also is giving me a half-dozen lessons, so overall I think I'm making out pretty nicely.  It's been a year since Panama and I have taken lessons, and I think we could use a refresher, especially if we're going to show this summer.

I'm a little nervous about turning Rondo over to the hands of yet another leaser, but I do feel better knowing that it's under the instruction of a trainer I know and trust.  And he looked pretty happy with J. on him, too, so I don't think he's opposed to the idea.  He's a great horse, and his reputation for a steady temperament has earned him a lot of respect at my barn.

That sounds like a great arrangement.

It is! And Rondo is such a good boy, too. He and J. really looked great together!
