Buying used horse stuff

I think I forgot to mention that I did buy that used jumping saddle that I found a couple weeks ago.  I tried it out for a few days -- the tack store gives you three days to "check out" a saddle in order to try it on your horse -- and it fit both Panama and me.  In fact, I love it -- the knee rolls have squishy padding instead of the thick, hard padding of my all-purpose saddle, and the seat is comfortable too.  I also feel like I can get my lower leg on Panama's sides much more easily (the other saddle's thick flaps put too much of a gap there), which was one of the main things I was looking for in an upgrade.

Showing plans and a couple of good rides

I knew I wanted to show Panama a little more this summer, and possibly start exposing Rondo to it too.  And per a recent conversation with her mom, V., the girl I nanny for, might start a partial lease on Panama, and show him this summer as well.  It's all very exciting, even though my trainer has some reservations about how well he'll handle it, and whether he'll be safe for V. to ride at shows.  I think he will be okay, since he did so well at that schooling show in September, but I also know that there are things we will need to expose him to in the meantime -- the way jumps look at other facilities, for example, since he is used to the rather bare-bones jumps at our barn.

Grand Prix jumping!

Last night was the Grand Prix jumping show at the National Western Stock Show here in Denver.  Like last year, I went with my trainer and a group of her other students and some of their family members, and this year I took the 11-year-old girl I nanny for.  It was a great evening, and a very tense show, with five horses in the jump-off -- though only three different riders (two of them were each riding two horses in the jump-off).

Me and my boys

I realized that I didn't have any pictures of me with both of my horses, so I had my trainer take this picture of the three of us today.  Isn't it a great picture?  It's also misleading though, because they look about the same size in this picture... and they are not at all.  Rondo (on the left, for those new to my blog) is over a hand taller and several hundred pounds heavier than Panama (the pinto).

Unexpected

I had to get up early this morning to pull blankets, since it went from a high of 10 degrees over the weekend to 30 yesterday, but with clouds and a wind chill and a general refusal to warm up very quickly.  So the horses had had their blankets on since Friday evening, and since it was supposed to be in the low 50s today, I knew I couldn't wait very long before getting their blankets off.

I have been having a hard time falling asleep lately, though -- extremely unusual for me -- so I woke up tired and slightly sick this morning from the lack of sleep.  I had been planning to ride, but with the way I felt, I decided to just pull blankets and go back home, maybe to take a nap.

But it was gorgeous out at the barn, and Panama kept nickering and looking at me like this:

Review of the Bitten bit warmer

While shopping at one of our local tack stores before Christmas, I discovered the Bitten: a bit warmer that makes use of disposable hand warmers (like what you can buy in sports equipment stores) to warm the bit.  I'd heard before that bit warmers didn't work very well, so I was skeptical, but I decided to try it out anyway.

Motivation

I titled a post on my novel blog "Motivation," too, though in that case, I've had the motivation: I've worked on my novel every single day since Saturday, nearly a week now.  Apparently, though, motivating myself to meet two goals at the same time is more challenging, since my horses have been ignored in the meantime.  I did ride Panama last night, and my trainer rode Rondo today, but that's it since the last time I posted.  I didn't even get out to the barn over the weekend, as I'd planned -- too busy writing.

Having two horses

Having two horses has been more of a time commitment than I was expecting.  Unfortunately, when I've struggled with time -- which has been a lot, this year -- it's been Rondo whose attention has suffered.  It's easier to hop on Panama for a quick ride, so when my time is limited (which is usually), that's what I do.

Last weekend, though, I posted on Facebook that I was looking for a barn friend to pull blankets for me Sunday morning, since I wasn't going to be able to get out there until nearly 1pm.  The boarder who responded only pulled Panama's blanket.  When people forget that you have two horses, it's a definite sign that you aren't spending enough time with the second!
