Happy New Year!

This year has been a difficult one in many ways (I swear, our animals took turns getting sick or injured all year long!), and has seen a lot of changes for me (such as my nanny job -- technically, I started it at the end of 2011, but in 2012 it really became a part of me).  Of course, the biggest difficulty, and the biggest change, was losing our dog Grace a few weeks ago.  We went to the vet today to finally pick up her collar, harness, and paw print, and it was harder than I thought it would be.

Thinking back on 2012, and looking ahead to 2013, has me thinking about the things I want to do differently in the coming year.  I definitely want to make more time for my horses, as well as for my writing, both of which have often suffered from my busy schedule the past year.  Grace being gone has -- bittersweetly -- freed up some of the time that I spent on regular appointments and general care for her, and to make some more time I think I will just have to start being a little more selfish about what I commit to.  I have to make sure I still take enough work to make money, of course, but there are various other time-sucks that I could pare down (a prime candidate being Facebook) in order to make better use of my time.

White Christmas!

Happy holidays to all of my readers!  We are enjoying a white Christmas here in Colorado -- kind of unusual for us, actually.  It snowed several inches overnight, and it's quite cold today (only in the teens), so I don't think I'll be going to the barn this afternoon.  The ponies should be snug and warm -- I went to the barn yesterday afternoon to blanket them and pass out homemade horse treats (the kids I take care of helped me make them) to all our friends.

Horse therapy

For the first few days after we euthanized our dog Grace, I didn't particularly feel like going to the barn.  The only time I went was when I took A, the little boy I take care of, to the barn for some horse time that Friday.

By the end of the weekend, which was quite busy, I was beginning to crave that horse time again.

Never any easier

Some of my long-time readers may remember that I lost my cat, Prince, in the spring of 2010.  That loss was particularly hard to go through -- not only was it the first pet of mine that I'd ever lost (versus family pets when I was growing up), Prince was also my first cat when I moved out on my own.  We had been together 11 years and I was nowhere near ready to give him up.

Yesterday we suffered another loss: Grace, our white shepherd.

Jumping!

Every week, I take V., the little girl I nanny for, to her riding lesson and watch her jump.  It's made me want to step up my own lessons and do some jumping, too, but unfortunately I have had a tight couple of months, money-wise, and haven't been able to do Rondo's training and lessons on Panama

The other night, it finally occurred to me to try jumping Panama on my own.  This is kind of a big deal, because despite having taken at least a dozen jumping lessons at intervals over the last couple years, I've never attempted it on my own.  But on Wednesday night, I decided to try it -- and we did great!  We must have jumped 20 times, and it felt wonderful.
