Happy New Year!

This year has been a difficult one in many ways (I swear, our animals took turns getting sick or injured all year long!), and has seen a lot of changes for me (such as my nanny job -- technically, I started it at the end of 2011, but in 2012 it really became a part of me).  Of course, the biggest difficulty, and the biggest change, was losing our dog Grace a few weeks ago.  We went to the vet today to finally pick up her collar, harness, and paw print, and it was harder than I thought it would be.

Thinking back on 2012, and looking ahead to 2013, has me thinking about the things I want to do differently in the coming year.  I definitely want to make more time for my horses, as well as for my writing, both of which have often suffered from my busy schedule the past year.  Grace being gone has -- bittersweetly -- freed up some of the time that I spent on regular appointments and general care for her, and to make some more time I think I will just have to start being a little more selfish about what I commit to.  I have to make sure I still take enough work to make money, of course, but there are various other time-sucks that I could pare down (a prime candidate being Facebook) in order to make better use of my time.

My horse-related New Year's resolution for 2013 is to ride my horses three days a week -- each.  Most of the time I ride Panama that often (though not when it's as cold as it's been lately), but currently I've only been riding Rondo when my trainer comes once a week.  Sometimes it's because of time constraints, and sometimes it's because I'm not entirely comfortable riding him without someone else there (though that is becoming less of a concern lately).  I need to try riding both horses in one day versus alternating (and just committing to going out to the barn nearly every day), and seeing which I prefer.

What about you?  Do you have any goals -- or guidelines -- for things you want to accomplish in 2013?  And how many of you are planning on ringing in the new year with your horses?  It'll be cold here tomorrow -- a high of 27 -- but I'm still planning on being out there to spend at least a little time with my boys!

Happy New Year!

You definitely have had a hard year. Occasionally you would post about something you went through and I felt overwhelmed by some of the challenges you have taken on. Hopefully, whatever is in the cards for you this year will be a winning hand. Like you, I'm just busting my butt to work with my horses since I've had to experience what happens when life takes a left turn and horses are just left to hang out with the herd for a couple of years. Not fun. I may as well have adopted three wild mustangs the way things are going.

It's funny that you say this, because I was just reading your most recent post this morning, and thinking that you and I are in the same boat with trying to find time to work with multiple horses. I know you had a full plate in 2012 too -- moving was probably far more of an ordeal than the many littler things I went through. Hopefully 2013 will be kinder to both of us!

It can be hard being selfish about your time - but sometimes is so necessary!

I love some of your focus for 2013 - more time for your horses and to write - me too!

I've gotten back into a novel I've been writing for years (about horses of course!) and really, really want to finish it and publish it in 2013.

Christine, it really is so hard, but with any luck I'll be able to stick with it this year! Best of luck with your novel and with 2013 in general!
