Video: My funny horse!

I've posted pictures before of my horse's funny little "grain-gasm," where he curls his right front leg while he eats his grain. He's done it since we rescued him as a yearling.

Well, I finally got a video of it over the weekend:

I'm a bit ashamed of the way he throws his head around while he eats — a sure sign that his teeth need to be floated — but luckily the vet's coming tomorrow to take care of that. It'll be Panama's first dental, so wish us lots of luck!

That is really funny. Had his feet been trimmed by the time you got him? I'm kind of wondering if someone started feeding him as a reward for picking up his feet to be trimmed, and he got the two events of eating grain and picking up his feet jumbled together in his brain.

No, his feet had never been done before we got him as a yearling. He also had some significant problems with his feet being picked up until I moved him to Denver at age 2 and was able to start working with him on it, so I don't think that's it. Plus, it's always the same foot. I think it's probably like a kid sucking his thumb or fingering his ear when watching his favorite show.

He looks like he is doing something like what Gilly did when I first got him. He would shift his weight from side to side, swaying back and forth. All the while sighing deeply as he ate his food. I always thought it was because he had been so hungry and to get good food made him so happy that it was maybe an calming thing he was doing? Who knows? But what Panama is doing looks like it may be the same thing, like releasing endorphins.
