Watch Blinders online

I've mentioned before about Blinders, the documentary that exposes the living and working conditions of NYC carriage horses. Good news that may lead to more publicity for the documentary, and therefore more public awareness of the issue: Blinders won a Genesis Award!

Here's some more good news: you can actually watch Blinders online. It's a great documentary and I highly recommend watching it!

Blinders is a very skewed "documentary." Ever notice that the only "talking heads" are all animal rights activists? A lot of the footage isn't from NYC, and the only truly objectionable NYC footage is of the drivers reading or talking on cell phones while driving.

It's been a long time since I've watched Blinders -- three years, in fact, if you look at the date on this post -- but I have a feeling that what I call objectionable and you call objectionable are probably two very different things. I don't have to see shocking footage to know that living in a tiny stall, spending all day on pavement and in traffic, and being sent to kill auctions instead of to a well-earned retirement make the industry distasteful. Horse-drawn carriages may be pretty and nostalgic on the surface, but the very nature of the industry requires that horses be treated badly. So despite where the more "objectionable" footage was taken, it doesn't change how I feel about the industry as a whole.
